Treasure of Egypt

I love archeology and Egyptology was a major player at Nat Geo over many many years. So it was fun (and daunting) to handle such a collection. But oh my, such a wide range of image sources, forms (analog and digital) and photographic styles that needed to be corralled. Writer Ann Williams was indispensable in keeping it all straight and photo editor Meredith Wilcox seemed to be able to find almost anything that Ann felt was key. The challenge was interweaving the documentary style images (most from NG magazine assignments) with the artifacts, most often supplied by different museums. The solution was to go heavy on silhouettes and drop shadows for the latter, balanced with straight use of the former. The cover was conceived by design director Elisa Gibson—only she would be able to push through a title on its side (anytime I tried that as a freelancer, it would get shot down). The book was ranked among the top 10 photo books on Amazon when it appeared.
